In 1992, the Labour Court recommended a £5 weekly increase for Swift Marketing workers, effective from 1 April 1992. Its recommendation, dated 13 May 1992, followed a claim by the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union for higher basic rates. The union said the workers’ duties resembled those in the display and exhibition industry, where rates were higher. Swift Marketing disputed the comparison and said increased labour costs could damage its competitiveness. The Court did not recommend a fixed relationship with the comparator firm but said an increase was warranted given the range of work.
