In 1991, the Labour Court recommended that Grignan Limited, trading as Muffins Bakery, reduce an apprentice baker’s unpaid suspension from one week to two days. The recommendation was dated 13 June 1991. The company said the worker had failed to follow its absence notification procedure and had been abusive to the manager. The worker said he had informed colleagues about his college attendance and that the suspension was unfair. The Court said some verbal abuse had occurred but found the one-week penalty too severe. The worker had refused the company’s offer of £50, saying he had lost a week’s wages.
