In 1991, the Labour Court recommended that Jury's Hotel not concede the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union's claims over a maintenance trainee's employment and extra payment for occasional weekend work. The recommendation was dated 11 April 1991. The Court said the trainee scheme did not appear to require the hotel to retain staff beyond its operational needs. It noted that permanent maintenance staffing had increased since the trainee began and that he had benefited from the scheme. On weekend scheduling, the Court found workers were already liable to work every second Sunday and that being required to do so only occasionally did not warrant special treatment.
