In 1990, the Labour Court recommended changes to Greenhills Foods Limited’s pension-related redundancy payment for workers affected by the company’s closure. It recommended counting service after age 25 and increasing the payment to £200 for each year of qualified service. The recommendation was signed on 25 October 1990. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union had sought six weeks’ pay per year of service plus statutory entitlements. Greenhills Foods offered four weeks’ pay per year, inclusive of statutory entitlements, and a separate payment for service after age 41. The Court left the core redundancy terms unchanged and recommended that staff accept the company’s offer as amended.
