In 1990, the Labour Court recommended that Manufacturing Science Finance could make a claim for a shorter working week for 22 workers, provided it did not conflict with the Programme for National Recovery. The Court signed its recommendation on 22 October 1990. The union argued that workers already on less than 40 hours should be able to negotiate pro rata benefits based on productivity, profitability or new technology. Racal Chubb Ireland Limited said it would examine claims individually but could reject those contrary to the programme. The Court recommended in favour of a union claim based on productivity or new technology that would not increase costs.
