In 1990, the Labour Court recommended that Dublin Corporation compensate a timekeeper for one year’s loss of overtime and grade rate. The recommendation was signed on 18 October 1990.
The timekeeper had received a higher grade rate and four hours’ weekly overtime while supervising watchmen. After the supervisory structure was disbanded, he returned to his substantive timekeeper grade and lost the higher rate and overtime. The Irish Municipal Employees’ Trade Union sought compensation, while the Corporation argued the higher pay depended on coordinating duties he had stopped doing. The Court said the losses arose from circumstances entirely unrelated to his particular work and recommended compensation equal to one year’s lost overtime and grade rate.
