In 1990, the Labour Court rejected a claim for extra pay for about 920 Cadbury Ireland Limited production workers who trained new employees. The recommendation was signed on 18 October 1990.
The Amalgamated Transport and General Workers’ Union and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought higher-grade pay or other monetary recognition for workers involved in training. Cadbury argued that training was already part of production workers’ duties under existing agreements and that extra payments would disrupt its grading structure. The Court considered the 1976 and 1977 agreements still in force and found that later arrangements had not established a precedent for change. It found no grounds to recommend compensation.
