In 1990, the Labour Court recommended a 2.5% salary increase for lightkeepers employed by the Commissioners Of Irish Lights. The recommendation was signed on 12 October 1990. The dispute concerned how to compensate for a reduction in working hours when the lightkeepers’ roster made an actual reduction impractical. The Commissioners offered an adjustment based on 26 hours worked in a year; the Amalgamated Transport And General Workers Union sought an increase based on 52 weeks. The Court treated 26 weeks on duty as equivalent to a normal 48-week working year.
