Labour Court recommends £500 compensation for Beamish and Crawford casual worker

By Rory Hanlon

Labour Court ·

In 1990, the Labour Court recommended that Beamish and Crawford P.L.C. pay £500 to a casual worker who lost the prospect of future permanent employment after being laid off. The recommendation was dated 22 May 1990. The worker said he was laid off and not recalled after declining to speak against a co-worker. The company said the lay-off followed its agreement for casual employees and the end of the busy season. The Court did not find that he was victimised in the lay-off or failure to recall, but said the workplace had not provided a climate to help him qualify for permanent work despite his reasonable expectation that an opportunity might arise. It recommended £500 compensation for that lost expectation.
