Labour Court says case can be made for accident and emergency nurses’ allowance

In 1990, the Labour Court said a sustainable case could be made for extending a special allowance to nurses in accident and emergency departments. It recommended that the matter be finalised in the context of an imminent comprehensive review of nursing wages and conditions. The recommendation was signed on 11 May 1990. The Irish Nurses Organisation argued that the work required specialist skills and additional effort comparable to areas already receiving the allowance. Voluntary Hospitals said accident and emergency work was part of nurses’ normal duties and did not warrant a separate payment.
