In 1990, the Labour Court recommended that Milford House Nursing Home concede The Irish Nurses' Organisation's claim for a time-and-a-quarter night duty premium from 1 January 1991. The recommendation was signed on 2 March 1990. The union sought six years' retrospection, saying an earlier agreement had not been honoured and nurses should receive conditions comparable to health service workers. Milford House cited the cost of the premium and its financial position. The Court noted the historical reasons for the absence of night premiums, including trade-off agreements and the suitability of the hours for some staff.
