In 1990, the Labour Court recommended ending a two-hour Mass attendance concession for workers at Office Of Public Works (Killarney National Park), with £150 compensation for each worker. The recommendation was signed on 5 April 1990.
The arrangement had continued at Killarney National Park after time off for Mass ended elsewhere in the Office of Public Works in 1984. The decision said it continued because of an administrative error. Services Industrial Professional Technical Union argued the concession was an established employment condition; the Office said it should be discontinued.
The Court said the practice was no longer justified and recommended that the union accept its discontinuation. It also recommended £150 compensation for each worker, citing the length of time the arrangement had continued and the additional time off the workers had received.
