In 1990, the Labour Court recommended that a harbour constable accept proposals to transfer to permanent night security duties while keeping his existing pay and uniform. The recommendation was signed on 6 February 1990. Drogheda Harbour Commissioners said there was enough work for only one daytime constable and had proposed making the junior position redundant before offering the worker night security duties. The Amalgamated Transport And General Workers' Union opposed the transfer, arguing that port traffic and cover needs justified retaining two daytime constables. The Court said the Harbour Board no longer needed two constables during the day and recommended acceptance of proposals originating with the Industrial Relations Officer and confirmed by the Board.
