In 1990, the Labour Court recommended that the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union accept the proposal of Irish Metals And Chemicals Company Limited on a 39-hour week. The recommendation was signed on 1 February 1990. The union sought a one-hour reduction while workers kept their early clock-out arrangement and guaranteed the same weekly output. The company said workers already worked 39 hours and 35 minutes while receiving 40 hours' pay, and offered a 39-hour week.
