In 1990, the Labour Court recommended that Timbercraft Limited recognise the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union for employees who were members, and that the two sides begin discussions on a comprehensive agreement. The recommendation was signed on 29 January 1990. The union sought negotiations on pay, annual leave, working hours and health and safety at the company's Newbridge plant, which employed about 100 people. Timbercraft said workers were represented by a staff committee and that it would negotiate with a union if workers sought union representation.
