In 1990, the Labour Court recommended that Lapple (Ireland) Limited and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union and National Engineering and Electrical Trade Union implement a 39-hour week through a one-hour weekly reduction from 1 March. The unions sought an earlier start and opposed continuous machine running during breaks and at night. The company argued reduced hours would cost production time and turnover. The Court recommended the reduction subject to agreement on the company’s proposals, excluding continuous running, and called for further talks on that issue. Its recommendation was signed on 25 January 1990.
