Labour Court backs restoration of Penneys' part-time to full-time staff ratio

The Labour Court recommended that Penneys Limited and the Irish Distributive And Administrative Trade Union begin immediate talks on store hours and staffing. Pending those talks, it said the company should agree to the union's claim to restore the previous ratio of part-time to full-time staff. The recommendation was signed on 14 November 1989. The union sought full-time positions for two existing part-time workers after two full-time employees moved to part-time work. Penneys said the store's trading level did not justify more full-time staff and cited increased costs and the need for flexibility.
