The Labour Court recommended that M.B. Ireland Limited accept the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union's proposal to provide time off in the off-peak period, rather than remove the afternoon break. The recommendation set 1 July 1989 as the implementation date and was signed on 13 November 1989. The union sought a 39-hour week for approximately 170 workers under the Programme for National Recovery and proposed accumulating hours to take as time off in January or February. The company proposed changes to hours and breaks to offset costs.
