The Labour Court recommended that Arklow Pottery raise its lump-sum offer for casting-plant operators to £550 and that the employer's offer of an extra 5p per hour for an automatic-lifter operator be accepted. The recommendation was dated 3 August 1989. The Irish Transport And General Workers' Union sought a weekly 5% rise for operators working with the new casting plant, arguing that the new system restricted breaks and increased pressure. The company cited the plant's cost of more than £120,000 and said the work's nature had not changed. In a separate claim, the union sought a higher rate for the automatic-lifter operator. The Court recommended that the employer's 5p-per-hour offer be accepted.
