In 1989, the Labour Court recommended that Powers Supermarkets Limited and the IRISH NATIONAL UNION OF VINTNERS, GROCERS AND ALLIED TRADES ASSISTANTS agree to end their 1984 night crew agreement and negotiate uniform terms for the company's night workers across the metropolitan area. The recommendation was signed on 27 February 1989. The union alleged that replacement crews were working on less favourable wages and conditions, including a cut in the evening/night differential from 33.33% to 20%. The company said the Sandyford agreement had proved too costly and that it had renegotiated terms with staff individually.
