In 1989, the Labour Court recommended that Kitchen Accessories Limited and the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union negotiate over a proposed salary structure. The recommendation was signed on 20 February 1989. The union sought salary grades and increments for administrative, sales and operative staff, saying annual reviews did not provide adequate cost-of-living adjustments or progression. Kitchen Accessories Limited preferred annual merit increases and performance-based bonuses, and said recent increases had brought wages into line with comparable employments. The Court said the proposed salary scales might be too elaborate for the small group, but workers should receive salaries reflecting their potential earnings compared with similar employments. It recommended direct negotiations on that basis, assisted by an Industrial Relations Officer.
