Labour Court recommends £2.50 canteen allowance for Roches Stores Sunday trading

In 1989, the Labour Court recommended that Roches Stores (Blackrock) provide a special £2.50 canteen allowance for each Sunday when trading began at 2pm, settling the Irish Distributive And Administrative Trade Union’s claims over Christmas trading conditions. The union had sought conditions matching Henry Street, including a £5 meal allowance, a paid tea break and extra annual leave. Roches Stores said its Blackrock and Henry Street operations served different markets and that Blackrock workers already received a £142 bonus, double time for late nights and treble time for Sunday work. The recommendation was signed on 14 February 1989.
