Labour Court recommends Youghal Carpet union accept three-shift plan

In 1989, the Labour Court recommended that the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union accept Youghal Carpet (Yarns) Limited's proposal to extend three-shift working throughout its Cork plant. The union opposed the plan over its social impact and potential overtime losses. The Court said the change would make better use of new equipment, support employment security and avoid the retraining costs and production disruption it said the union's alternative would cause. Its recommendation took account of the company's undertaking to retain some existing two-shift and day jobs and to provide opportunities to offset certain overtime losses. The recommendation was signed on 16 February 1989.
