The Labour Court recommended a pay structure for ten telecommunications technicians employed by the Department Of Defence, setting salaries at 12.5% below the Communications Technical Officer Grade III rate. It signed the recommendation on 27 October 1988. Manufacturing Science Finance sought pay parity with Grade III officers. The Department accepted that a pay relationship was desirable but proposed a different comparator. The Court found the technicians had somewhat similar duties but less responsibility and worked with a narrower range of equipment. It rejected the parity claim and recommended that the salaries be paid under the National Programme for Recovery.
