Labour Court recommends compromise on Cork Examiner bonus calculation

The Labour Court recommended a compromise in a dispute between the Cork Examiner and the National Graphical Association over bonus calculations affecting 70 workers. The recommendation was signed on 26 May 1988. The association argued that commercial-section staff should receive a pagination bonus on a basis comparable to Case Room workers. The company said its calculation excluded work the commercial staff did not handle and defended its figures under the agreement. The Court said the evidence did not clarify how the agreement's negotiators intended the average pagination to be calculated. Until the agreement was reviewed, it recommended adding to the company's calculated bonus half the difference between that figure and the bonus under the association's claimed method.
