The Labour Court recommended a new rate for three Tretorn Sport Limited spreading and cementing operatives whose union sought pay parity with felt-cutting operatives. The recommendation was signed on 26 May 1988. The Irish Transport And General Workers' Union said the work required skill and responsibility comparable to felt cutting. Tretorn Sport Limited argued that the comparison was unsuitable because the felt-cutting rate came from an earlier piece-rate system and warned that parity could prompt claims from other workers. The Court recommended that current cutting machinists be red-circled and that the parties negotiate a new rate for future entrants. It recommended that the agreed rate then apply to the three claimants from 1 September 1988.
