In 1988, the Labour Court recommended that porters at the Western Health Board's Regional Hospital in Galway wear white jackets, ending the use of green jackets and suits. The recommendation was signed on 21 April 1988. The Irish Transport And General Workers' Union had sought to retain the old-style uniform for 25 porters. The Court said white jackets were reasonable on hygiene and other grounds, while porters covered by a 1984 arrangement were to continue receiving a pair of shoes and trousers each year.
