In 1988, the Labour Court did not recommend concession of the Federated Workers' Union Of Ireland's claim for a revised grading structure covering about 380 clerical and administrative staff at Radio Telefis Eireann. The recommendation was signed on 11 April 1988. The union proposed four grades, arguing they would align the employer with comparable State companies and give it greater flexibility. Radio Telefis Eireann said its existing structure met its needs. The Court said grading structures develop to meet each employer's and its workers' needs and that comparisons with other employers did not provide a sound basis for changing the structure.
