In 1988, the Labour Court did not recommend concession of the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union's compensation claim for six canteen assistants at St. Patricks Hospital after weekend canteen work ended. The recommendation was signed on 7 April 1988. The union said weekend earnings had become a central part of the workers' normal wages. St. Patricks Hospital cited health-service cutbacks and said alternative arrangements offered a way to retain income. The Court recommended that the parties begin negotiations without delay on the employer's alternative arrangements.
