In 1988, the Labour Court found no grounds to recommend concession of the Irish Transport And General Workers Union's claim for a pay differential for seven machine and general assistants in the Central Bank Of Ireland's mint department. The recommendation was signed on 7 April 1988. The union argued the work required skills and responsibility, including setting coin-master machines, and cited a differential at the UK Royal Mint. The Central Bank Of Ireland said a productivity payment covered the skill element, its operation differed from the UK comparison, and the workers' weekly rate was 29% above the agreed basic industry rate.
