In 1988, the Labour Court recommended that Burmah Castrol (Ireland) Limited pay £250 each to four depot relief pool staff in full and final settlement of their claim. The recommendation was signed on 7 April 1988. The dispute concerned the company’s plan to replace Dublin relief staff sent to the Galway and New Ross depots with local temporary workers. The Irish Transport And General Workers' Union wanted to retain the existing arrangements, while the company said local cover would reduce disruption and costs and arrive sooner when needed.
