The Labour Court did not recommend conceding the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union's claim to increase the beef bonus at Halal Meat Packers Limited. The recommendation was signed on 24 February 1988. The union sought to raise the rate and link future increases to basic pay. The scheme paid £1.60 for each animal slaughtered above 260 a day. The company argued that the bonus scheme raised costs and noted that the average bonus per employee had risen from £522.85 in 1985/86 to £2,317.05 in 1987/88.
