Labour Court recommends talks on sick-pay scheme at Comer Yarns

The Labour Court recommended that Comer Yarns Limited and the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union begin negotiations without delay on a sick-pay scheme with terms to address abuse. It also recommended that they jointly examine ways to reduce absenteeism. The recommendation was dated 24 February 1988. The union had challenged the company's withdrawal of a scheme that provided one to five weeks' sick pay depending on service. Comer Yarns said absenteeism exceeded 10% and it withdrew the scheme after no improvement. The Court considered abuse might be only one factor contributing to high absenteeism.
