Labour Court recommends rent-based compensation for Royal Hospital Donnybrook residents

The Labour Court recommended compensation for nine Royal Hospital Donnybrook staff who had to leave the nurses' home: the equivalent of one week's rent, calculated at £21, for each year they had lived there. The recommendation was signed on 19 February 1988.

The Irish Transport and General Workers' Union and the National Nursing Council said the staff had lived in the accommodation for years and faced disruption and increased costs when they moved. They also alleged that management had intimidated some residents by removing facilities and turning off the heating. Hospital management denied intimidation and said the home was underused and its closure would reduce costs.

The Court considered that the workers' comparatively long use of the accommodation warranted compensation for the disturbance. It also recommended that any residents still there leave without delay, with hospital assistance in finding alternative accommodation if needed.
