Labour Court recommends £4,000 for Bewleys worker moved from accommodation

The Labour Court recommended that Bewleys Cafes Limited pay £4,000 to a worker who had to leave accommodation above its Grafton Street branch, along with receipted furniture removal expenses. The recommendation was signed on 28 January 1988.

The worker, a sales assistant and caretaker, had lived above the premises. After a fire officer’s order led to plans for a fire escape, he agreed to move and sought help with the costs. The Irish Transport And General Workers' Union sought compensation for expenses and losses connected with the move. The company argued that the safety requirements were outside its control and compensation was not warranted.

The Court also recommended that if the worker bought a house within 12 months, the company pay reasonable legal fees and stamp duty.
