In 1988, the Labour Court recommended that DE BEERS INDUSTRIAL DIAMOND DIVISION (IRELAND) and the IRISH TRANSPORT AND GENERAL WORKERS' UNION, NATIONAL ENGINEERING AND ELECTRICAL TRADES UNION, AMALGAMATED UNION OF ENGINEERING WORKERS and ELECTRICAL TRADES UNION agree a method for introducing deductions of union contributions at source by 1 April 1988. The recommendation was signed on 22 January 1988. The unions said the system was widely used and would cost little to implement. The company had previously argued that it would need to employ an extra worker and declined to attend the hearing.
