In 1988, the Labour Court recommended acceptance of Travenol Laboratories' latest offer, with an amendment to basic rates by the end of the agreement. The Irish Transport And General Workers' Union had sought the full terms of the National Plan over the agreement's life. The recommendation was signed on 22 January 1988. The Court recommended that basic rates at the agreement's end reach the level they would have attained had the first annual increase applied. It also recommended joint negotiations and a joint ballot on issues common to both plants, with the majority decision accepted. Travenol had said a no-increase commitment for 1988 was critical to reversing the proposed Castlebar closure.
