In 1988, the Labour Court did not recommend in favour of the Irish Aviation Executive Staff Association's pay claim for about 310 Aer Lingus Superintendent and analogous-grade employees. The recommendation was signed on 22 January 1988. The association sought basic-pay increases up to 29.55% and total-remuneration increases up to 23.33%, citing a consultant comparison with other organisations. Aer Lingus said cost-cutting and competition left no scope for special increases, while discussions with staff groups were aimed at savings. The Court cited the competitive environment, the airline's need to reduce costs and the ongoing discussions.
