In 1988, the Labour Court recommended that Commissioners Of Irish Lights pay fares to and from home for Ratings reporting to the Lighthouse Depot, but did not recommend the union's claim to cover hospital charges. The recommendation, signed on 20 January 1988, followed claims by Amalgamated Transport And General Workers' Union on behalf of about 80 Tender Ratings. The union sought travel-cost refunds for reporting on official business and coverage of a £10 hospital charge through the Sick Pay Scheme. The Commissioners said travel within the home-port area was not payable and argued the hospital charge was an individual responsibility that staff could insure against through the V.H.I. group scheme.
