In 1988, the Labour Court recommended a 10% increase on basic salary for two Irish Rail catering inspectors, effective from 13 October 1987, but did not recommend retrospection. The recommendation was signed on 14 January 1988 after the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association argued that restructuring had increased the inspectors' duties and responsibilities. Irish Rail disputed that a special increase was justified and cited its financial position. The Court found the restructuring had increased the claimants' responsibilities and that the salary claim had merit.
