In 1988, the Labour Court recommended a 2.5% pay increase for seven Twil Limited workers, effective from 1 December 1987, with the agreement to expire on 30 June 1988. The recommendation was signed on 12 January 1988. The Irish Transport And General Workers' Union had sought a 10% increase for forklift drivers and storemen at the company’s Dublin warehouse. The union cited earlier productivity gains and the erosion of living standards. Twil Limited said the warehouse had traded at a loss after recession and lost contracts, and warned that a larger increase could threaten jobs. The Court made its recommendation in light of the company’s trading position.
