In 1988, the Labour Court recommended that the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union agree to defer a 5% pay increase for Gaeltarra Knitwear Limited's workers until 1 March 1988. The company should make good the loss from the deferral when its finances allowed, with the matter to be reviewed in June 1988. The recommendation was signed on 12 January 1988. The union said workers had already agreed to defer the increase from January to October 1987 and wanted Gaeltarra Knitwear to honour that arrangement. The company said orders were down 20% to 30% in its home and US markets and it had suffered heavy losses. The Court recommended another deferral in light of the worsening trading position.
