The Labour Court recommended that Coal Distributors Limited's offer be accepted for the workers to whom it was made, in a dispute with the Marine Port And General Workers' Union over guaranteed overtime and boat manning. The recommendation was signed on 5 January 1988. The company had removed its guarantee of overtime and sought changes to staffing and boat manning. The union argued that guaranteed overtime had formed part of workers' basic earnings. The Court also recommended reviewing overtime earnings at the end of each of the next two years to ensure nobody lost more than the lump sum amount.
