In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that Roadstone Group of Companies Limited amend its offer to give approximately 725 craft and general workers a 4% pay increase from 1 June 1987, under an agreement ending 31 May 1988. The recommendation was signed on 2 December 1987. The Group of Unions sought a 10% rise over 12 months without a pay pause, shorter hours, more annual leave and reviews of sick pay and grade rates. It argued that members' earnings had fallen in real terms and that settlements elsewhere were more favourable. Roadstone cited falling sales, competition and poor prospects, and said its offer was the maximum it could afford.
