In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that Midland Health Board continue a psychiatric nurse's long-standing annual leave terms on a personal basis, while finding the Board's interpretation of the contract correct. The recommendation was signed on 1 December 1987. The Irish Transport and General Workers' Union sought to preserve the entitlement for a nurse with more than 20 years' service. The Board said the national agreement provided 32 calendar days of leave, which it interpreted as four weeks and four days. The union argued that the worker had long received more leave and that the move to community care brought added responsibility without overtime or premium payments.
