Labour Court recommends union accept Unidare's rotational lay-off approach

The Labour Court recommended that the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union (No. 2 Branch) accept Unidare PLC's approach to rotational lay-offs. The recommendation was signed on 20 November 1987. The union opposed the plan, arguing that voluntary departures were making progress and that the lay-offs selectively targeted its members. Unidare said it needed to reduce overheads amid a difficult trading position and that section heads were excluded because of their management responsibilities. The Court considered management's cost-control approach not unreasonable in the circumstances.
