Labour Court recommends union accept Alfa-Cavan's redundancy proposals

The Labour Court recommended that the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union accept Alfa-Cavan Rubber Manufacturing Company Limited's proposals in a dispute over the selection of supervisors for redundancy. The recommendation was signed on 18 November 1987. The company said it needed to reduce supervisory costs as part of a rationalisation programme linked to a fall in export value. It proposed two voluntary redundancies and offered the affected supervisors factory-floor jobs. The union argued the selection was unfair, including because a worker it considered outside the supervisory grade was retained in a supervisory role. The Court considered the company's proposals not unreasonable in the circumstances and recommended further discussions on redeployment.
