In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that the Irish Print Union be given a choice between C.B. Packaging Ltd's offer of 16 February 1987 and the pay increases in the Irish Printing Federation agreement. The recommendation was signed on 11 November 1987. The union sought the wage-round terms for nine members and was prepared to discuss rationalisation after pay was settled. C.B. Packaging Ltd said it had agreed a separate pay deal with most employees, including rationalisation measures it said were needed to cut costs. The Court did not recommend reducing working hours. It recommended meaningful negotiations on rationalisation after either pay option was accepted.
