In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union's Clare County Branch accept Studio Eyewear Limited's 4% pay offer over 12 months and its mortality benefit. The recommendation was signed on 12 November 1987. The union sought a pay increase, access to the company's VHI scheme, a pension scheme and casual leave days. Studio Eyewear cited losses and the effects of a fire that had reduced production at its Ennis factory. The Court recommended that Studio Eyewear provide minimum VHI cover from 1 January 1988 and that the union defer its other claims.
