In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that Arklow Pottery Limited offer about 150 workers a 3% increase on basic rates from 1 January 1988. The recommendation was signed on 9 November 1987, after the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union requested a further hearing on its wage claim. The union said workers' hourly pay was below rates in other industries and reported improved trading and exports. Arklow Pottery said its projected loss had increased and that its costs and market conditions made another pay rise infeasible. The Court recommended that the company's offer be accepted by the workers in settlement of the claim.
